Our day in court.....
Our day in court.....
Today was Abigail’s re-adoption hearing in Ft. Worth. This is the second to last requirement for her adoption (the last is a one year post-placement report by our social worker - which we’ll do within the next month). This process ensures the state will recognize Abigail’s position as an equal member of our family. It also allows us to get a Texas birth certificate which will be helpful for school enrollment, sports, etc...
This was an exciting event for us and a special day for Abigail. The family court in Ft. Worth makes a big deal of the day & creates a “party-esque” environment for the families. Each child there (those being adopted, as well as siblings & even friends) received a stuffed animal of their choice (there were a ton of stuffed animals arranged all over the court room).
We were thrilled that Missy’s aunt (Terry), uncle (Gary) & cousin (Matt) could make it as well as a very special friend - Rebecca & two of her three kids (Elic & Cabe). Having other people there to celebrate with us made the day that much better!
When the judge walked in the first thing he did was welcome the families & told us that this was one of the best things about his job & that today his court was our court. He gave us permission to take pictures and video the process.
There were a total of six families finalizing their adoptions today and we were the fifth family called up. Our lawyer asked us some basic questions (i.e. Had Abigail been in our house the required six months before re-adoption?, Had we taken her to a physician?, etc...). After we answered all the questions the judge declared the adoption final. The whole process (for all six families) took about an hour and when we were done there were cookies & punch.
Here are some pictures from our special event:
